Cream sugar, shortening, eggs, and vanilla thoroughly. Spoon flour into measuring cup, level off and pour flour onto the waxed paper. Add soda and salt to the flour. Stir to blend. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture. Mix well. Stir in M&M candies, reserving some to decorate the top of the cookies.
